Islam

What is Islam?

A brief introduction to the world's second-largest faith

The Meaning of "Islam"

The word Islam comes from the Arabic root s-l-m, which means peace and submission. In its religious context, Islam means the voluntary submission to the will of the One God — Allah in Arabic (the same God worshipped by Christians and Jews).

A person who practices Islam is called a Muslim, meaning "one who submits to God." With nearly 2 billion followers worldwide, Islam is one of the largest and fastest-growing religions on earth.

Core Beliefs

One God (Tawhid)

The most fundamental belief in Islam is Tawhid — the absolute oneness of God. Muslims believe God is the Creator of everything, has no partners, and is unlike anything in creation. God is merciful, just, and all-knowing.

The Prophets

Muslims believe God sent prophets throughout history to guide humanity — including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all). Muhammad ﷺ is regarded as the final prophet.

The Holy Books

Muslims believe in all divinely revealed scriptures, including the Torah, the Psalms, and the Gospel. The Quran is the final revelation, preserved in its original Arabic for over 1,400 years.

The Day of Judgment

Muslims believe in a Day of Judgment when every person will be held accountable for their actions. This belief inspires Muslims to live with integrity, kindness, and mindfulness of God.

Common Questions

Do Muslims worship the same God as Christians and Jews?

Yes. Allah is simply the Arabic word for God. Arab Christians also use the word "Allah" when referring to God. Muslims, Christians, and Jews all trace their faith back to Abraham.

Does Islam promote violence?

No. Islam condemns the killing of innocent people. The Quran states: "Whoever kills a soul ... it is as if he has killed all of mankind. And whoever saves one — it is as if he has saved all of mankind." (Quran 5:32). The vast majority of the world's 2 billion Muslims live peaceful, ordinary lives.

Are women oppressed in Islam?

Islam granted women rights to education, property ownership, inheritance, and the right to choose their spouse over 1,400 years ago. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The best of you are those who are best to their women." Cultural practices in some regions should not be confused with Islamic teachings.
